The Yin and Yang Within

“Genes are not the fixed, stable, immovable entities I was taught about; they are fluid and dynamic, and their activities are altered by every experience, thought, word, and action in a person’s life. So, why not direct your experience to influence your genes in the most positive ways?”

― Deepak Chopra, Quantum healing.

The origins of Yin and Yang trace back to ancient Chinese philosophy. Yin and Yang symbols are the two halves that together complete a whole. The concept is derived from Taoism and is based on the belief that everything in the universe contains two opposite forces: Yin and Yang. The two are said to originate from the Supreme Ultimate (Taiji), influencing the process of the universe and all that is in it.

The Yin energy symbolizes the dark, passive, feminine force. It is depicted by a closed door, by darkness, the south bank of a river or the north (or shady side) of a mountain. The Yang energy on the other hand symbolizes the light, active, masculine energy. It refers to height, brightness and the south side (or sunny side) of a mountain."

The Yin and Yang symbol reminds us that everything in life contains two opposites, and to maintain balance, we need to find a way to work harmoniously with both sides. Yin-yang is also a metaphor for the different aspects of our personalities. We all have a light side and a dark side, and it's important to find a way to balance both in our lives.

Yin and yang is a reminder that nothing in life is ever truly black or white, and there will always be a gray area. The "s curve" of the yin-yang symbolizes how yin and yang's complementary forces are inter-connected and continuously "ebbing and flowing" into one another. When yang swells at the top of the circle, yin contracts, and when yin swells at the bottom of the circle, yang contracts.

The quest of spirituality is this act of balancing the yin and yang within. It is constant and ever dynamic. It is the journey to recognize one’s own divine feminine and divine masculine. When they are in harmony, they bring balance to our internal and external realities. If they are out of balance, things do not flow with grace and ease. This sacred balance has been a key element to every spiritual tradition and every awakening journey that exists.

The same philosophy applies to group consciousness as well. The divine masculine has long been overemphasized in our culture — over-valuing aspects like productivity, rationality, and dominance. Often at the expense of honoring the more creative, softer, and intuitive domains of life. It is our task to reclaim the balance within in order to create a more harmonious society.

The Divine Feminine, or Sacred Feminine, tells us to be, pause, reflect, dig deep roots, and nurture. Our intuition is the gift of the Divine Feminine. The act of creation, of gestating an idea and then birthing it, is the realm of the Divine Feminine. The Divine Masculine, or Sacred Masculine on the other hand, instils in us courage, direction, focus, and confidence. It makes us stand up for what it right and protect our boundaries. Acting on our intuition is the realm of the divine masculine.

We came to earth armed with the incredible tools of both the divine masculine and feminine. When you balance both inner forces, you have embraced your humanity and can become a powerful force.

So, what are our take aways:

1. Nothing is all good or all bad – there is always a grey area.

2. Accept reality as it is. It is a mixture of positive and negative, ups and downs. Accepting what we can’t change is the first step to inner peace.

3. Understand the importance of balance. All of reality is a balance of dualities. Darkness follows daylight, death follows life. It is the way of nature.

4. Everything is in contact flux and flow. Reality is in constant movement, it has its own rhythm, its own cycle. Patterns are all around us.

“Yin and Yang are two aspects of three; with three being circular infinite and unifying spiraling into One... the Tao”

― Leland Lewis, Random Molecular Mirroring
